Addiction As A Disease - Is Addiction Really A Disease

Week 1 - The short film below is an excerpt from a documentary about addiction called "Pleasure Unwoven" by Dr. Kevin McCauley from the Institute for Addiction Study. The documentary as a whole explores the question of, "is addiction really a disease?" and presents arguments both for and against this theory. The documentary turns complex neuroscientific concepts into easy to understand visual images that will help people in recovery feel better understood and their families and friends feel hope that recovery is possible.

In this opening installment, we see a brief clip about "is addiction really a disease? " This question is commonly asked by both addicts and those in the field of addiction studies alike and there are many different opinions and theories around this.

Dr McCauley is himself a recovering addict and was very sceptical when he was told in treatment that addiction was a disease. He spent 10 years researching the issue, primarily out of curiosity to understand his own addictive behaviours and uncovered a great deal of arguments both for and against classifying addiction as a disease.

Throughout this series of short films, Dr McCauley investigates scientific, psychological, political and historical aspects of addiction. The films are both intellectually and visually stimulating, set in the beautiful US state of Utah and is highly recommended viewing for all clients attending treatment at The Recovery Lodge.

It is important to receive a scientifically reliable and evenly weighted education on this topic in order to override the often misconceived perceptions that the person suffering from addiction may have about themself and their illness, particularly in early recovery.
