Week 3 - The short film below is an excerpt from a documentary about addiction called "Pleasure Unwoven" by Dr. Kevin McCauley from the Institute for Addiction Study. The documentary as a whole explores the question of, "is addiction really a disease?" and presents arguments both for and against this theory. The documentary turns complex neuroscientific concepts into easy-to-understand visual images that will help people in recovery feel better understood, and their families and friends feel hope that recovery is possible.
In this installment, we see a brief clip about "the genetics of addiciton" and how far our genes go in determining whether or not we become addicts or alcoholics. Popular argument suggests that a combination of both genetics and environment, or nature versus nurture, cause addiction, and not the exclusivity of one over the other. A study of twins published by alcoholrehab.com gives some detailed findings into this.
Learning about what causes addiction is a useful tool when it comes to understanding addiction from the addicts point of view. Many addicts blame their parents or wider family for their addiction, whether it be because their parents were also addicts or because of the disfunctional upbringing they had. Either way, it is important to receive a scientifically reliable and evenly weighted education on this topic in order to override the often misconceived perceptions of the addict, particularly in early recovery.
